Inverter
The electronic bridge between DC resources and an AC grid.
DC enters on the left; the inverter produces a controlled AC output on the right.
An inverter converts direct-current electricity into alternating-current electricity. Grid-connected inverters also control how a resource interacts with the network.
Making AC from a DC source
An inverter uses electronic switches and control systems to produce an AC output from a DC input. Solar panels and batteries are common DC resources, so their connection to an AC grid usually includes an inverter.
Its control system matters as much as the conversion itself. Depending on the design, it can regulate output, help control voltage, or respond to changes in grid conditions. Not every inverter can power a home during a grid outage.
Why it matters
Inverters are a central interface for solar and battery resources. Their capabilities determine how those resources can support the network.
